I get loads of books at my job. Many of them I send on to my book reviewer, but several of them I've brought home to read. This book was one of them. I tore through it, engrossed in the sadness of a family who has lost their mother and husband who has lost his wife.
Although the book changes voices somewhere in the middle from the father to the son, I found it both riveting and true to life. Teenagers are hard to live with without a big challenge like a death in the family or drug abuse. Here's my review:
Second Chances by Linda Chadwick
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This book is very compelling about a family suffering from the recent death of their mother/wife. The father and the three children all have their own ways of coping with the death - most notably, the teenage son gets into a fight which leads to a brutal attack of retaliation. He is prescribed painkillers for broken ribs and other injuries and can't get off of them. The characters are believable and the situation heart-rending.
